Chicago Rugby Super Weekend 2016

Chicago Rugby Super Weekend 2016

Rugby-Chicago-2016-crowdThe Chicago rugby ‘super’ weekend for 2016 was another BIG success for the game in North America.

The All Blacks may not have won, but it was a crazy fun time to be in Chicago with the Cubs World Series win and the Americans more than a little anxious about the presidential election!

img_7344As for the rugby you have it hand it to the Irish, they played a sensational game and really outplayed the All Blacks in every way possible. It was their first ever victory over the All Blacks and an epic upset to what had been 18 straight wins for the men in black. While All Blacks fans were gracious in defeat, Irish fans were in very good spirits and I’m sure there wasn’t a drop of Guinness left in the city after they finished celebrating! Let’s not also forget the Maori All Blacks played a fantastic game on the Friday afternoon and had another very convincing win over the USA Eagles.

Overall the kiwis who made it to Chicago were treated to an unbreakable atmosphere largely due to the Chicago Cubs taking out the World Series after 108 years. Cubs fans were everywhere and the mood couldn’t have been more jubilant as people took to the streets and celebrated throughout the region. It was also amazing to see local Kia Ora chapters across North America converging for special events outside of rugby such as Maori Kapa Haka performances, pre and post-game get-togethers, meet and greets with players or just people catching up over deep dish pizza.Rugby-Chicago-216-KapaHaka

We are looking forward to what comes next in Chicago! The All Blacks seem to have cemented Soldier field as their go to destination for their annual US test match and with 63,000 fans in attendance I’m sure they will be welcomed back next year.
