15 Mar Vancouver Rugby Sevens 2016
The inaugural Rugby Seven’s kicked off on March 12th in Vancouver over 2 epic days. This was the tournament’s first stop in Vancouver and what a stop it was! I think everyone had some trepidations about whether the event could be as insanely fun as Wellington – but we were pleasantly surprised. Apart from a few hiccups blocking off the Kiwi Fan zone, the Canada Sevens team delivered an outstanding event.
In front of a sellout crowd of rugby fans and newly converted rugby fans we witnessed top notch games and sportsmanship from the 15 competing teams. The party atmosphere slowly built as the days wore on (and the beverages disappeared) including several street festivities around BC Place. It was great to meet and greet friends and families throughout the stadium and move between the zones. It was especially great to see so many kiwis show up in costume and get into the spirit of Sevens rugby.
The crowning moment of this year’s event had to be the kiwis taking out the win! After struggling through some of the previous stops leading up to Vancouver, the boys finally found their form and gained a well-deserved victory. We can look forward to the Vancouver Sevens for 3 more years at least thanks for the overwhelming support and success of this year’s event.
